Three Things You'll Learn

  1. You can take control of your own life instead of letting its possibilities drag you along.

  2. It's important to commit to a job in order to build resilience, rather than constantly jump to different places.

  3. Using a bullet journal, or similar tools, can help with time management and prioritization.

A Summary Of The Episode

Jim DeCarlo, Chief Growth Officer at Wealthspire Advisors, discusses family, living with intentionality, and keeping your priorities straight.

Jim lived in Australia for over 20 years, having moved there to play and then coach lacrosse. He describes some of the biggest differences between Australian and American cultures, such as the pace of life. Life in Australia is not as fast-paced because people make more time to engage with each other. This experience has shaped the way Jim approaches everything in his life.

[12:58] “I think we’ve left an impression on our children and on our friends and family that you don’t have to opt into the chaos. You can say no. You can take agency in your life. That’s something that I think has shown up since we’ve come back. Of course, sometimes our friends think that we’ve lost our minds, but we choose not to play the game, quite often.”

He describes how his days playing lacrosse have influenced his work. He teaches people the importance of keeping an eye on the clock and making firm decisions. He addresses the fact that many young people focus on their freedom, moving from job to job. Jim points out that it is necessary for people to commit to a job for a longer time in order to build resilience and grit.

[15:46] “We’ve been taught that freedom, and the freedom of thought, and the freedom to leave, and the freedom to get a new job, and the freedom to be whoever you want, is all good. And I think when you look back, we’re going to learn that sometimes, I think a talented individual, at some point in their career, needs to commit to the role they’re in for a period of time and I think that that’s the key point in today’s world. If you make a decision, make a decision, commit, and then work through it from there. Otherwise, we don’t build resilience and we don’t build grit.”

Family is Jim’s top priority and his choices reflect that fact. He chooses not to stay very late at work because of his commitment to his wife and kids. He also discusses the importance of time management in keeping priorities straight and making sure everything gets done. He describes the difference between things that are important, things that are urgent, and things that are both important and urgent. It is necessary to do things in their proper time in order to live intentionally and not in crisis mode.
