What to know about Medicare when on the move.

Given COVID’s continuing challenges, it’s hard to imagine traveling abroad now. But choosing the right Medicare coverage has implications that may last far beyond COVID, including coverage benefits that may apply to future travel.
If you’re planning to travel internationally after COVID subsides, it’s important to consider that:
- Original Medicare generally doesn’t cover care outside the United States. - Most Medicare Advantage Plans typically don’t cover care outside the U.S. Also, plans usually don’t cover non-emergency care you get outside of your plan’s network.
For these reasons, you may want to consider a Medigap policy that offers additional international coverage.
Indeed, Standard Medigap Plans C, D, F, G, M, and N provide foreign travel emergency health care coverage when you travel outside the U.S.
If you have Medigap Plan C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, M or N, your plan: - Covers foreign emergency care if the care begins during the first 60 days of your trip, and if Medicare doesn't otherwise cover the care. - Pays 80% of the billed charges for certain medically necessary emergency care outside the U.S. after you meet a $250 deductible for the year.
Foreign travel emergency coverage with Medigap policies has a lifetime limit of $50,000.
