Walmart’s tough-to-beat prices make it a favorite one-stop shop for many Americans. Whether you’re refilling a prescription, grabbing groceries, or fueling up on gas, Walmart’s low prices can help you stay on budget, especially if you’re living on a fixed income.
Unfortunately, Walmart does not offer a senior citizen discount. But there are other ways you can save money when shopping at Walmart, including signing up for their discounted Walmart+ Assist program, refilling $4 prescriptions, and earning cash back with Walmart Cash.
In this article, we’ll explain how to increase savings and convenience when shopping at Walmart as a senior.

Though Walmart doesn’t offer a senior discount, other programs and incentives can help you save money and time when shopping at the store.
Unfortunately, Walmart does not offer a senior-specific pharmacy discount. But their $4 prescription program helps many people get their generic prescriptions at a low cost. With Walmart’s low-cost prescription program, you can refill many common generic medications for just $4 for a 30-day supply or $10 for a 90-day supply.
Simply take your generic prescription to a Walmart pharmacy to take advantage of their low-cost prescription program. But keep in mind that there are some limitations to this program, including:
Not all generic medications qualify for the $4 prescription program, including antihistamines, antibiotics, and steroids.
Prices for drugs may vary according to the state. Some medications in California and Minnesota, for example, may cost more.
When purchasing non-prescription items like Tylenol or cold and flu remedies at a Walmart pharmacy, you can use a Medicare OTC card to pay for your purchases for additional savings (learn more about whether your health plan covers Medicare OTC cards and how to use them here).
If you qualify for government assistance with SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, or other programs, you may be eligible for 50% off a Walmart+ Assist membership.
You can check your eligibility online with Walmart and SheerID, where you will fill out an eligibility verification form. This verification process won’t impact your credit score or existing government benefits.
Once your eligibility is confirmed, you can return to the Walmart website to finish enrolling in a discounted Walmart+ Assist membership.

Free grocery delivery from your nearest store (keep in mind that seniors who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid may be able to receive a grocery allowance through some Medicare Advantage plans).

When you download the free Walmart app on your phone or tablet, you can sign up to receive alerts on savings and promotional deals. With the Walmart app, you can also request curbside pickup and automatic prescription refills.
Explore manufacturer offers on Walmart’s website or within the app to get Walmart Cash when you purchase eligible products. You can then use your Walmart Cash on future Walmart purchases or receive cash back. To participate in the program, all you need to do is create and sign in to a Walmart.com account.
Unlike other brand-name stores, like Harris Teeter or Kohl’s, Walmart does not offer a senior discount. But if you’re shopping on a budget, some strategies can help you save more on your purchases:
Become a Walmart+ Assist member: If you qualify for 50% off a Walmart+ Assist membership, you can save 10¢ on the gallon at participating fuel stations. With the membership, you’ll also have access to free shipping, free grocery delivery, free tire repair, and early access to certain promotions.
Sign up to receive alerts on savings: With the Walmart app, you can sign up to receive notifications about promotions and deals.
Keep an eye out for manufacturer offers: Look for manufacturer offers online or through Walmart’s app to get Walmart Cash on eligible purchases. Walmart cash can be redeemed on future purchases or as cash back.
Senior discounts can be a helpful way to save money on day-to-day expenses. But even when shopping at retailers who don’t offer a senior discount, like Walmart, there are other ways to increase your savings.
